COLLATERAL DAMAGE

Savannah

We descended the stairs to find the party in full swing. People chattered, most likely proposing business deals as we maneuvered through them, aiming for the bar. I watched for my mother, Ethan, and Corina, so I could, at the very least, avoid them.

I felt as though my friendship group had shattered, and the only person who’d stuck by me was Jake. I knew more people than I could count, but they were nothing more than acquaintances. All my life I’d been treated differently due to my parents’ status. It wasn’t easy to find friends who didn’t have ulterior motives.

“The same as earlier,” I told the bartender, Lenny. “But can you make it double the strength and two.”

Lenny observed Jake and me—mainly me—with caution.

“Please,” I pouted. “The only way I can survive this thing is with a lot of alcohol.” Honestly, I didn’t know how I would endure the rest of the day with any amount of alcohol. It was already a disaster.

“Fine, but if anyone asks, it’s a mocktail.” He cocked an eyebrow, waiting for my confirmation.

“Of course. I’m not an idiot.”

He grunted under his breath and began making the drinks. I perched my side against the counter and faced Jake. He had his dreamy eyes on, and I followed his gaze, already knowing who it would land on.

“Jesus, Jake. You haven’t looked at anyone like that since tenth grade when you got your first blowjob.”

Behind the school toilets.

“You should talk,” Jake shot back. “I’ve seen the way you look at Caden. I hope you get some dick soon because even I’m getting antsy waiting for it to happen.”

I narrowed my eyes, regretting calling him out. “I don’t know…”

“What don’t you know?” he prompted.

I drummed my fingers on the marble bar countertop. “Caden asked me to go to LA with him for his game.”

“Wow, next thing you know, he will be proposing to you,” Jake replied with a gleam in his eye.

I chewed on the inside of my lip. “I can’t go. I told him I would, but that was only because he was trying to withhold an orgasm from me so I’d agree.”

“What do you mean you can’t go? When a guy asks you to go to LA with him, especially with his head in between your legs, you don’t ask questions, Savannah. You pack your bags and haul your ass with him. What the fuck is wrong with you?”

Lenny set our drinks on the counter, and I gave him a grateful smile. “Thank you. You’re honestly a lifesaver.”

I took my drink and pushed Jake’s in his direction while I mulled over his words. “I can’t go,” I said again. “For many reasons. You know that I’m busy with dancing, and the auditions are in less than two weeks. I have to put in the work if I want to keep my spot in the academy.” I couldn’t afford to be distracted, and Caden was the biggest distraction I’d ever come across.

We walked with the drinks in our hands.
